Travelling Lesbos Island (Lesvos, Mytilene, Μυτιλήνη), Northeastern Aegean Sea, Greece | Hero photo: Molyvos, also known as Mythimna is one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Lesbos.
Lesbos (Lesvos) is a large Greek Island in the Aegean Sea. Known for its scenic beauty, history and ideal weather, the Island is also very popular with lesbian travellers. This is due primarily to the island being the birthplace of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. Her poetry, which often expressed love and adoration for other women, inspired the modern term “lesbian”. The town of Eressos was her place of birth and has become a mecca of sorts for lesbians around the world.
Mytilene’s Ancient Past
Lesbos has a long and storied history. The capital city of Mytilene was founded in the 11th century BC, and the island has been settled and ruled by various civilizations and empires ever since. The remnants of this history can be found everywhere, including some majestic castles and other ancient architecture. The Byzantine castle Molyvos is one of the most impressive on the island and is used in the summer for concerts and cultural activities. Other popular artifacts include the Mytilene castle that overlooks the capital and the Roman aqueduct at Moria. There are also numerous museums throughout the Isle of Lesbos, including the renowned Theophilus museum near Mytilini.
Travelling Lesbos (Mytilene) for Sun and Sand
For those more interested in sunshine and sand than history, Lesbos also has plenty of beautiful beaches. Some are full of activity and water sports, while others are peaceful and secluded. Skala Erosses is one of the best beaches in all of Greece. It includes a nude bathing area and even a lake full of turtles nearby. Another popular spot is the pebble beach of Eftalou, which is close to some hot springs. Natural hot springs on the island are abundant and are some of the warmest in Europe.
Town of Eressos
Combine a beautiful sandy beach, amazing restaurants and a cool spiritual community and you have the most interesting beach town in Greece.
As mentioned previously, the town of Eressos is a popular destination for gay women. The main street of this charming village is a seaside promenade with restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Lesbian couples own and operate many businesses. The best time to visit Eressos is during the International Women’s Festival, which occurs annually in September.
